Honduras
In one of the most remote regions of Honduras, HBE partnered with the Honduras Agalta Valley Education (HAVE) Foundation to support the transformation of local education infrastructure and community perception. Through a combination of strategic planning, international collaboration, and high-profile events, HBE helped turn basic rural schools into inspiring centers of learning and pride, boosting attendance and reshaping the futures of hundreds of children in the Agalta Valley.
Summary
What began as a vision to bring basic education to rural Honduras evolved into a decades-long mission led by Atlanta-based business leaders and coordinated by HBE. With schools already built and hundreds of students enrolled, the goal shifted toward elevating the perceived value of education within the community. Through creative branding, beautification efforts, and global media engagement—including the dedication of “Vince Dooley Field” with Honduras’ president in attendance—HBE helped transform the schools into aspirational symbols of hope and opportunity.
Challenge
The educational landscape in the Agalta Valley was severely underdeveloped. Schools were single-room structures, teachers were scarce, and there was no legal requirement for children to attend. Many families depended on child labor for survival, making it difficult to justify time away from work for education. The challenge was not only to build functioning schools but to inspire a cultural shift that would make education a valued and respected part of village life.
Solutions
To overcome this challenge, HBE and the HAVE Foundation implemented a multi-pronged approach:
Beautification of school grounds to make them visually stand out and serve as local landmarks.
Creation of “Vince Dooley Field”, a landscaped soccer field named after the University of Georgia football legend, to give the schools a unique identity. Orchestration of a high-profile dedication event featuring Honduras President Juan Orlando Hernandez and U.S. football icon Vince Dooley. Media outreach and public relations to secure national and international coverage and instill local pride.
