Hope-Beckham President Bob Hope presided over a press conference and rally in support of Title IX, part of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The act states, "There shall be no discrimination throughout our institutions on the basis of sex." A large banner behind the podium read, "Don't Drop the Ball: Preserve Title IX."
Hope was joind by the Honoable Birch Bayh, former US Senator and author of Title IX; Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, Georgia Secretary of State Cathy Cox, National Women's Law Center Co-President Marcia Greenberger; CEO of Girls, Inc. Janet Street; Chair of the Georgia Commission on Women Nellie Duke; Georgia State Representatives Kathy Ashe and Nan Orrock; President of the Jerzees division of Russell Corporation Cheryl Berry and others.
Former North Carolina State University scholarship volleyball player and current Hope-Beckham Vice President Holly Clifford provided her personal testimony of the direct and indirect impact of Title IX on her life and career. She credits the law for helping her have positive self-esteem and to be assertive, as well as the educational opportunity afforded her.
